From the Herschel
Hobbs Commentary:
"As
a teaching method, “a parable is an extended metaphor comparing a
spiritual truth with something from the listeners’ everyday
world.” Often parables are fictitious narratives but are
completely agreeable to the laws and usages of human life. In other
words, a parable may be a made-up story but it is something that could
well happen. Of course, what is important about a parable is the truth
it is intended to convey. Nevertheless, the stories are engaging—we
might even say entertaining—and involve the listeners by calling for
them to make a judgment or decision that personalizes the truth being
taught."
